Bird Supplies Online

Whether you have a cockatiel, finch, or a cockatoo, a bird can be a wonderful companion. Nevertheless, it is your responsibility to ensure your bird has everything it needs to live a happy and healthy life. If you are searching for the perfect supplies to put in your bird's cage to keep your feathered friend comfortable, we have some helpful and practical suggestions that will make the cage a happy and comfortable place for your little friend.

Food

Food and treats are an essential item for your bird. Before you bring your new bird home, ask the breeder or shelter what they have been feeding the bird. They may even be able to supply you with some of what they have been feeding your bird so you can transition them slowly. As well as feeding your bird quality pellets specifically formulated for their specific breed, some people like to add fresh or dehydrated fruits and vegetables. You may also feed your bird cooked brown rice, beans or nuts. Foods to avoid include chocolate, avocado, onion and alcohol. You may also want to purchase some treats which you can use if you choose to train your bird or even just to give when you want to spoil them.

Cuttlebones and Mineral Blocks

Birds beaks are continuously growing so they will need something to wear it down. Cuttlebones and mineral blocks are perfect for this as they also provide your bird with a good source of calcium and other minerals, as well as an outlet for their chewing instinct. Cuttlebones and mineral blocks are a relatively cheap way of ensuring your bird gets enough calcium in their diet.

First Aid

Like you would with any animal, you are also going to want to have a well-stocked first aid kit so you can tend to your bird in an emergency. Some essential supplies we would recommend including in your bird first aid kit include:

  • Antiseptics or antibacterials - e.g. Betadine
  • Materials to clean and dress a wound such as cotton balls, gauze, bandages and paper tape
  • Products to control bleeding such as styptic powder
  • Some general supplies such as tweezers, scissors and gloves
  • Energy supplement or other emergency nutrition sources - e.g. Wombaroo First Aid for Birds, Spark Liquid Concentrate

Worming Products

Birds need regular worming (typically every three months) to keep them free from these nasty parasites. Even if you only own one bird, they can pick up worms from a variety of sources including from perches, natural foraging toys, and even from you!

It may not always be obvious that your bird has worms but some signs that may indicate an infection can include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • A sick looking appearance
  • Feather plucking
  • Worms may appear in droppings or hanging from the cloaca
  • Young birds that have worms will struggle to gain weight and may cry incessantly

Popular bird wormers you can purchase from VetProductsDirect include - Aristopet Bird Wormer Plus Syrup, Avitrol Plus and Wormout Gel.

Supplements

There are several vitamins and minerals that are essential to keep your bird in excellent health. Some essential vitamins and minerals include vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D3, B complex vitamins and calcium.

Vitamin A deficiency is very common in birds and will affect their eyes, feathers, immune system and reproductive system. Vitamin D3 comes from sunlight and some birds may need supplementation if they do not get enough exposure to direct light. B group vitamins will help your bird to break down their food and allow them to absorb the nutrients. Calcium is a crucial mineral for your birds to ensure healthy bone development, feather growth and healthy eggs. Adding some omega 3 and 6 oils to your bird's diet is never a bad idea either, helping to boost their immune response and keep them healthy.
