Calming

Dogs can get anxiety just like humans. Whether they are afraid of storms and thunder, loud events like fireworks, nervous around strangers or destructive when left home alone for too long, these are all signs of an anxious dog. Research has found that over 70 percent of dogs experience some form of anxiety. For some dogs, they can manage with the help of their human. Others may require extra support from over the counter supplements, thunder shirts or other pressure garments, or anxiety treats.

Other things you can do to help your anxious dog includes ensuring they have a safe place to go when they feel anxious, positive reinforcement training during anxious episodes, and desensitisation and counter-conditioning training. In the event that a dog has severe anxiety, your veterinarian may be able to prescribe medication to help alleviate some of their symptoms. Top brands of calming products we stock include Adaptil collars and diffuser, 4 Calming Paste, PAW Complete Calm, Thundershirt, Vetalogica Tranquil treats and chews and Zylkene capsules.

Repellents

To help encourage ideal behaviour in your dog, you can use a repellent to keep them away from certain areas in your yard or home. The ingredient in deterrent and repellent sprays give off an unpleasant odour for the dog and help prevent unwanted behaviours such as digging or inappropriate urination and soiling in specific areas of the home and yard.

Keep your dog out of your garden beds and away from your freshly laid lawn with repellent products such as Aristopet home and garden repellent. To stop your dog from sinking their teeth into your brand new lounge, try Fido’s Chewstop Spray. If your puppy or adult dog won’t stop chewing on their blanket, bandages or paws, Bio-Groom Bitter Taste Spray and Aristopet Stop Chew Spray both contain an incredibly bitter ingredient that doesn’t sting.

Muzzles

There are a few situations where it may be suitable for your dog to wear a muzzle. If your dog gets anxious at the vet, it can help to make everyone feel more comfortable if your dog is muzzled and might speed up your visit. Maybe your dog really hates getting their nails trimmed. For the safety of everyone's fingers, wearing a muzzle may be the safest choice in this situation. A dog that has been injured and is in pain may unintentionally lash out which is why a muzzle is an important inclusion in every dog first aid kit. Dogs that get nervous around strange people or dogs or dogs that have previously shown aggression towards other dogs or people should be muzzle trained as well. Depending on where you live and the breed of your dog, your local council or government may require your dog to be muzzled in public. Avoiding a dog bite incident by muzzling your dog can help to avoid a lot of heartache later as once a dog has bitten a person, they may be declared a dangerous dog which can lead to severe penalties, onerous restrictions or even seizure and euthanasia.

To make sure your dog is comfortable wearing a muzzle when necessary, start your training as soon as possible. Using high value treats, slowly introduce your dog to the muzzle until they will happily wear it for up to 15-20 minutes at a time. We stock muzzles in nylon or plastic. Nylon muzzles will prevent your dog from barking, biting or nipping but allows your dog to pant. Plastic muzzles are a basket shape and will prevent your dog from chewing, biting and barking. Ensure you are measuring your dog correctly so you purchase the right size for your dog. Never leave your dog unattended in a muzzle or muzzled for long periods of time.

Harness

If you have been having trouble walking your dog, you may want to consider making the switch from a collar to a harness for better control. Collars can place pressure on your dog's windpipe or spine which is increased if they suddenly lunge or pull. For dogs that have trouble breathing such as brachycephalic breeds (e.g. Pugs, French Bulldogs), a harness causes less restriction on their breathing than a collar. If you often travel with your dog in the car, or like to enjoy outdoor adventures like hiking or biking with your best bud, a harness can make these activities even easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

There are two main types of harnesses - front attaching or back attaching. Front attaching harnesses are recommended for large breed dogs and dogs that usually pull on a leash. The Halti Front Control Harness attaches at two points, at the front of the harness, and on the back between the dogs shoulders. This both reduces pulling and allows you to steer your dog making walkies much more enjoyable for you both. We also stock the Halti Head Collar which teaches your dog not to pull with the unique patented design gently directing your dog's head when they pull.

Cleanup

We’ve got everything you need to clean up after your puppy or adult dog at great prices. Training pads are an essential item for any new dog owner. Accidents happen and it’s best to be prepared. You can use training pads to clean up accidental messes made by new puppies or senior dogs with incontinence. Place them on the floor of playpens or line pet carriers to soak up any unexpected mess. They are also ideal to use underneath the food and water bowls of messy eaters. Cleaning up is a breeze, simply fold up the pad and dispose of it appropriately.

Simply wiping up urine isn’t enough to remove all traces and may lead to further accidents. To properly remove all traces of urine, a special enzymatic agent is required. We stock leading brands such as UrineFREE, Urine OFF and Piss Off
