About Our Dog Wormers & Worming Tablets

Ensuring you have a sufficient supply of wormers for your dog on hand is essential due to how common intestinal worm infections are in dogs Puppies can be infected with worms while they are still in the mother or through the Mother’s milk. Dogs can also contract intestinal worms if they are digging, sniffing or playing in infected grass or dirt if they eat an infected animal like a rodent, or from a flea bite.

Intestinal worm infections may go unnoticed and undiagnosed for months as dogs often do not show symptoms until they are severely ill. In many cases, giving your dog worming tablets or treatments will be enough to kill off the infestation. However, sometimes they can persist and, in these cases, it is recommended that you seek advice from your veterinarian.

At VPD, we stock an extensive range of wormer treatments for dogs, including top Vet-recommended brands such as Nexgard Spectra, Advocate, Drontal and many more.

The Risks of Intestinal Parasites in Dogs

Left untreated, a dog with worms can suffer from malnutrition, dehydration, intestinal blockage, and organ damage. Humans and especially young children are at risk of contracting worms from an infected dog.

Types of Intestinal Canine Worms

Tapeworms – Tapeworms live in the small intestine of infected dogs and can sometimes be seen around the dog’s bottom or in their poo. The flat, off-white coloured worm can grow up to 10 to over 70cm in length. A dog infected with tapeworm will often “scoot” or drag their bottom along the ground. A dog with a severe tapeworm infestation can suffer from vomiting and might vomit up some worms.

Roundworms – As the name suggests, roundworms have a spaghetti-like shape and are the most common intestinal worm that affects dogs. Roundworms are very commonly found in puppies as they can contract roundworms from their mother, both while they are still inside her or through her milk. A roundworm infestation in puppies can stunt their growth as the worm will consume food in the dog’s intestine, starving the growing puppy of vital nutrients. Dogs can contract roundworms when they come into contact with infected faeces. Humans can also contract roundworms if they accidentally ingest roundworm eggs.

Hookworms – Hookworms latch onto your dog’s intestine using their sharp teeth and feed on your pet’s blood, which if left untreated, can lead to anaemia. Hookworm larvae can penetrate your dog’s skin if they are picked up off the ground from infected soil or ingested by an infected animal such as rodents or other wildlife. Puppies can contract hookworm via an infected mother’s milk. Symptoms of a hookworm infection can include weight loss, bloody diarrhoea and a dull or dry coat.

Whipworms – Whipworms cannot be transmitted to humans but do cause severe illness in dogs. Whipworm infections are common amongst dogs that live in shelters or kennels as the eggs can survive up to 5 years in an ideal environment. They have long, thin tails and live in the dog’s large intestine. In the early stages of infection, dogs may not show symptoms. After the infection has progressed, dogs can develop diarrhoea, weight loss or in cases of severe infection, anaemia. Read more about Why Worming Your Pet Is So Important.
